PROVENCE & COTE
d'AZUR
Provence
Provence lies in the hills between the sea and the Alps.
It is a cultivated land with sloping vineyards and colourful scenery
that charmed the artists Cezanne, Van Gogh, Chagall and Giono.
In Provence, the local people have a soft singing accent
which evokes their relaxed lifestyle.
The area has the mildest
climate in France with average temperatures of 25° C (77° F)
in July and August, 12° C (55° F) in December
and January. In early spring the myriad flowers are at their best,
while in late spring numbers of unusual birds are at their highest.
Some
of the most attractive architectural features of Provence are the villages
perchés (perched villages). They rise like jagged summits
on the hilltops where they were built for safety in the Middle Ages.

ACTIVITES
Water sports
Sailing - Antibes, Cannes, Mandelieu-La Napoule and St Raphaël
are large water sports centres where non-boat owners can
hire a set of sails. Most tourist offices have a list of sailing
centres (stations violes) that rent out gear and run courses.
Water skiing, jet skiing, parachute rides and windsurfing are also
available on the coast.
Boat trips
Ferry boats link Nice to Cannes and St Tropez.
Various ferries also link the coast to the off-shore islands (Iles
de Lerins to Cannes, Juan-les-Pins and Vallauris-Golfe; Iles d'Hyeres
to Ste Maxime and St Tropez; Porquerolles to Ste Maxime and St Tropez)
There are boat services to St Tropez which, in view of the congestion
of the coast road in the summer months, are a highly recommended
way of travelling to this part of the coast (St Raphael - April to
July and St Maxime - April to November).
Water parks such as Aquatica in
Frejus are great fun for all the family.
Golf
There are numerous golf courses on the coast. At the height of the
season early booking is recommended.
Skiing
The Alpes d'Azur rise high above Nice up to 4000m. Ski resorts include
Greolieres sur Neige (about 1 1/2 hours from Seillans) and Isola
(about 3 hours from Seillans). In the winter the Alps offer sunny
skiing and in the summer one can explore the area on horseback,
on foot or by bike. Even dare-devils will find sports to their
taste with such choices as parachute jumping, flying ULM's, rafting,
abseiling or mountain climbing
